What to compare

Separate the draw period from the repayment period. Rates are often variable and payments can rise when repayment of principal begins.

Questions to ask

Ask about the rate index, margin, floors, caps, draw requirements and annual fees. Test higher rates and the later repayment payment.

Build a complete cost picture

List the amount received, repayment schedule, interest rate, fees and total amount repaid. Use the same amount and term when comparing offers. Check whether the rate can change and whether early repayment carries a charge. An estimate cannot establish approval or eligibility.
